AI Memory, State of the Art
How each major AI provider and open-source memory system stores, recalls and forgets, with the limits and benchmark disputes that matter, as of October 2026.
Updated 22 Oct 2026. Every record has a source, a source date, the time we last checked it, and a grade: A verified, B the source said it (linked, dated), C our estimate.
The short version
Recall is mostly solved. Tracking change over time, bringing things up unprompted, and sharing memory across providers are not.
What we found
- Every frontier provider now runs two layers: saved memories you can edit, and implicit use of past chats.
- No vendor-neutral memory standard exists. Moving memory between providers is copy-paste.
- Open-source systems changed fast in 2026. Letta retired its V1 server and Mem0 shut down its local MCP server, so older guides are out of date.
- Vendor benchmark scores are disputed. Mem0 self-reports 94.4 on LongMemEval and an independent paper measured 49.0%.
